As we approach the end of the school year, Frederick County Public Schools’ Superintendent Dr. Theresa Alban decided to add a way to engage with FCPS families, students and the community. Today she launched a new blog, Off the Cuff, to share the stories and perspectives that shape her views about public education. She will post blog entries on new topics every week, inviting the community to offer their own views and ideas about the topics she writes about by responding through FCPS social media.
Her first entry—My Parents Believed in the Promise of Public Education. Do You?—features photos of Dr. Alban as a high school graduate, teaching her first-grade class and of her parents. Dr. Alban gets personal in the blog, letting readers know that her parents—children of the Great Depression--quit school to help support their families, her father finding work in a steel mill. She describes her journey as honoring her parents’ personal American Dream, and she blogs about how her life’s work and mission started at the schoolhouse door.
