FCPS Parent Wins State-Level Award

FCPS Parent Wins State-Level Award

At the Board of Education of Frederick County’s most recent public meeting, Board President Brad Young presented a prestigious BOE pin to Maria Rodriguez, a Waverley Elementary parent and the state-level winner of the 2017 Maryland ELL Family Involvement Network (MELLFIN) John Nelson Parent Involvement Matters Award.  Ms. Rodriguez, who serves as PTA vice president and in many other volunteer capacities at the school, earned the annual award as an immigrant parent whose exemplary contributions to Maryland public schools have led to improvements for children, schools and districts.

According to Donna Quatman-Wilder, FCPS Family and Community Involvement teacher specialist, MELLFIN selected Ms. Rodriguez to receive the award because of her passion and commitment to family-school engagement: “Ms. Rodriguez has continuously and exceedingly demonstrated active involvement in several core areas of the Maryland’s Prek-12 Family Engagement Framework. She has been a contributing Family Involvement Title I Team (FITT) member, actively recruiting many parents and community members to join her crusade to improve immigrant communication and ensure student safety.”

MELLFIN presented the award to Ms. Rodriguez at their annual conference in Hyattsville, Maryland, where she also served as a panel member in the session, United Voices: A Conversation with Immigrant Parent Leaders. Additional information is online: http://www.mellfin.org/1.html
