FCPS Boasts 2017 Maryland PE Teacher of the Year

“It’s quite an honor to be the sole statewide recipient of this award,” says Principal Randy Perrell. “We are very proud of Mr. Basford!”

“Mr. Basford moves forward as one of 13 finalists in the SHAPE America Eastern District Elementary PE Teacher of the Year Award competition,” says FCPS Elementary Health and Physical Education Curriculum Specialist Jamie Hitchner, who won last year’s William Burdick Award from MAHPERD. “He will have opportunities to share the very best of FCPS with educators nationwide.”

Four other FCPS employees also received special recognition at the MAHPERD banquet last Friday. Teachers Chris Barnhart from Thurmont Primary, Gary Burgess from New Midway/Woodsboro Elementary and Sarah Palmer from Emmitsburg Elementary each received a 2017 Simon McNeely Award for exceptional teaching with creativity and innovation in physical education.They were among 22 physical educators statewide to receive the award.

 A newly appointed coordinator for Secondary Specialized Programs, Lauren Regalia received the 2017 Distinguished Friend of MAHPERD Award for her outstanding work in advocacy, leadership and professional development, as the former FCPS Adapted PE Teacher Specialist.
