Frederick County Public Schools is continuing a relatively new tradition when it comes to countywide fairs. The school system is not only hosting the 36th annual elementary Science and Engineering Fair at Tuscarora High and the secondary portion for grades 6-12 there the same day, Saturday, April 1, but also the 4th annual elementary Social Studies Fair. All are open free to the public.
Elementary science and social studies events are from 9:30 a.m. until noon. A free STEM Showcase, with hands-on science, technology, engineering and math projects, is also open to the public during the elementary science fair. The STEM Showcase is open to students of all grade levels.
The secondary Science and Engineering Fair, featuring projects from grades 6-12, is open free to visitors from 3-4 p.m., with an awards ceremony beginning at 4.
The shared date and location allow families an opportunity to spend the day enjoying projects and research based on student interests. The schedule also allows elementary students participating in both fairs to explore more information about a particular interest. For example, a student completing a science project to learn which plants grow well under certain conditions could broaden that topic to complete a related social studies project about how agriculture affects the community.
