Project Overview

The Frederick High School replacement project includes providing comprehensive design and construction administration services to construct a new high school on the existing site and then demolishing the existing school building. Students will remain in the current building while the new building is constructed.  The replacement school will be approximately 270,618 square feet and will be designed for a state rated capacity of 1826 students.  The new building will be an energy efficient building, meeting LEED silver certification requirements at minimum.  Once the new building has been completed, the old building will be demolished and the athletic fields and site amenities will be restored and reconstructed.

Phase I: Feasibility Study (Completed)

The first step in the modernization of Frederick High was to perform a feasibility study. The purpose of the feasibility study was to identify school facility renovation/modernization needs and the cost of meeting those needs.  The study was completed in December 2012 and in February 2013, the Board of Education approved Option Number 5 to construct a new facility on the existing site that will be located on the existing parking lot to the west of the existing building.  Students will remain in the current building while the new building is constructed. Option 5 received approval from the Designees of the Interagency Committee on School Construction in February 2013. Learn more about Phase I

Phase II: Design and Permitting (Current Phase)
The Design Development (DD) plans for the new Frederick High School were approved by the Board of Education on June 11, 2014 and then by the State on August 11, thus allowing progression to the Construction Documents (CD) phase.  We are currently at the 50% mark of the CD phase of design, where the specifications, plans and details are finalized in all facets of construction from site work and masonry to architectural, mechanical and electrical.  These documents allow for the bidding process to commence and construction of the site and building to take place.  The CD phase, will continue into December, 2014 with anticipated Board of Education approval and state submission coming in January 2015. Ground improvement work will begin in October/November for the building pad.  This process is anticipated to take 3-4 months to complete.. Phase III: Construction
Bidding of the project is slated for Spring 2015 with anticipated construction starting July 2015 and the school opening Fall 2017.  Demolition of the existing building and final site work will follow with total project completion by fall 2018.
Community Involvement
Throughout the entire project, FCPS will work closely with the community to not only provide detailed information and regular updates on the project, but also to gather input and ideas.
