Frederick High School Replacement
FHS banner
Project Overview
The Frederick High School replacement project includes providing comprehensive design and construction administration services to construct a new high school on the existing site and then demolishing the existing school building. Students will remain in the current building while the new building is constructed.  The replacement school will be approximately 270,618 square feet and will be designed for a state rated capacity of 1826 students.  The new building will be an energy efficient building, meeting LEED silver certification requirements at minimum.  Once the new building has been completed, the old building will be demolished and the athletic fields and site amenities will be restored and reconstructed.

Phase I: Feasibility Study (Completed)

The first step in the modernization of Frederick High was to perform a feasibility study. The purpose of the feasibility study was to identify school facility renovation/modernization needs and the cost of meeting those needs.  The study was completed in December 2012 and in February 2013, the Board of Education approved Option Number 5 to construct a new facility on the existing site that will be located on the existing parking lot to the west of the existing building.  Students will remain in the current building while the new building is constructed. Option 5 received approval from the Designees of the Interagency Committee on School Construction in February 2013. Learn more about Phase I

Phase II: Design and Permitting
The Design Development (DD) plans for the new Frederick High School were approved by the Board of Education on June 11, 2014 and then by the State on August 11, thus allowing progression to the Construction Documents (CD) phase. During the CD phase, all specifications, plans and details were finalized in relation to all facets of construction from site work and masonry to architectural, mechanical and electrical. The CD phase of design was completed in December 2014 and the Board of Education approved the construction documents on January 14, 2015. These documents have been submitted to the State for review and approval.

Phase III: Bidding and Construction (Current Phase)
The bid documents are scheduled to be released to the public on February 9, 2015. The bid process will be split into two phases:

1. The site work will be bid first which will allow some of the necessary preconstruction activities, such as excavation and grading, to be completed prior to the start of the 2015-2016 school year. Early preconstruction will begin in May 2015 and will include items such as the temporary parking lot, water line relocation, greenhouse demolition etc.

2. The remainder of the construction packages will be bid a few weeks after the site package and is anticipated to be awarded in late May or early June. The majority of construction is anticipated to begin in July 2015, pending funding approval.

The new Frederick High facility is scheduled to open for students in August 2017. Demolition of the existing building and final site work will begin after the new school opens and is scheduled to be complete by fall 2018.
Community Involvement
Throughout the entire project, FCPS will work closely with the community to not only provide detailed information and regular updates on the project, but also to gather input and ideas.
