Credit Requirements FCPS requires a minimum of 25 credits to graduate. This includes the minimum 21 credits beyond the 8th grade required by the Maryland State Board of Education and 4 additional credits that FCPS requires: 1 in math and 3 career pathway credits. Requirements are outlined in the chart to the right.
IMPORTANT:Maryland graduation requirements are in transition. FCPS will communicate each high school student's individual graduation requirements at the start of the 2014-2015 school year. Please see the following links for details.
High School Assessments (HSA) HSAs are state-level, end-of-course exams aimed at raising academic standards and preparing students to compete in the workplace and post-secondary education. High school students enrolled in Biology and Government must take the exams at the completion of each course. Passing the HSAs is a graduation requirement; students must achieve one of the following in order to receive a diploma:
pass the exams, or
earn a minimum total combined score
Although as of June 2014 students can retake the HSAs as many times as necessary to pass, the state is considering regulations that would limit the number of retake opportunities. Extra help is available at all high schools, and Maryland's Bridge Plan is an alternative for some students who are unable to pass the exams despite receiving additional support. Discuss concerns with the school counselor or a teacher.
