All interested substitutes will be required to attend a substitute orientation as a part of the onboarding process. So everyone can feel ready to support our students. This orientation is designed specifically for our daily substitutes. This day-long session allows for us to deep-dive into topics like classroom management, special education supports and much more with our Substitutes.

From Application to Classroom

  • Apply Online 
    • ✓ Submit your application through the FCPS hiring portal: FCPS Substitute Positions 
    • ✓ Ensure all sections are complete and references are provided. 

  • Application Review
    • ✓ Human Resources reviews applications for eligibility. 
    • ✓ Qualified candidates are selected to move forward. 

  • Attend Orientation
    • ✓ Selected applicants are invited to attend a Substitute Orientation. 
    • ✓ Orientations are held monthly and are posted on the FCPS website. 
    • ✓ Attendance is required before being approved to substitute. 

  • Become Active
    • ✓ After completing orientation, applicants are activated in the substitute system. 
    • ✓ Substitutes may begin accepting assignments. 

  • Cycle Repeats Monthly
    • ✓ New application windows, screenings, and orientations are offered each month. 
    • ✓ Applicants who miss a cycle may apply the next one.

Minimum Maryland requirements, at a glance:

Substitutes must be willing to commit to working at least 20 days during the course of the school year to be eligible for hire and remain active on our rosters.

College Students

College Students

Any college student assigned as an FCPS intern will be automatically qualified to substitute. Students pursuing degrees in education will be exempt from the 20 day annual work requirement.

Retired Educators

Retired Educators

If you are a retired FCPS teacher, you must still apply and complete all required background checks.

Transcripts and other employment verification steps will be waived, as appropriate.
