The Board of Education of Frederick County unanimously approved a data-security policy last July to establish a data-governance framework for the school system’s technology security standards. Policy 208 states that the Board is committed to ensuring that operation of the Frederick County Public Schools’ information-technology systems meets the necessary security controls and standards to ensure reasonable protection for the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the data for which FCPS is responsible.
At the Board’s direction, the school system openly initiated a competitive Request for Proposal (RFP) process to procure the services of a professional IT security firm to perform independent verification and validation operations. The contract was awarded to Janus Associates, and work is underway.
A cross-departmental team of FCPS data-privacy leaders has established a Data Privacy Center of Excellence for staff to quickly and efficiently receive information, support, guidance and training regarding protection of student and staff information. In addition, FCPS has released an annually required training module for all staff to reinforce the importance of information-security awareness and to promote appropriate data-privacy practices systemwide.
FCPS will continue to provide the community with updates on its ongoing activities to strengthen IT security and privacy measures.
