Frederick County Public Schools has begun a feasibility study to determine the best way to modernize and expand Waverley Elementary School. The study’s purpose is to identify school renovation needs, additional space needs, options for meeting the needs and estimated costs for each option.
During the study of possibilities, FCPS will provide opportunities for parents, students, staff and community members to give their opinions, providing Spanish interpretation and, upon request, other languages. FCPS will work with an architectural consultant to consider several options. They include whether to renovate and expand the current building, replace the current building with a larger building or renovate the current building along with the existing Rock Creek School for Waverley’s use.
All are invited to the following events in the Waverley Elementary cafeteria: Monday, December 11 community meeting, 6 p.m. (snow date: Monday, December 18); Thursday, January 11, 6 p.m. (snow date: Thursday, January 18); and a presentation of final options Thursday, February 15, 6 p.m. (snow date Thursday, February 22).
In addition, the project’s progress meetings—typically held every other Thursday afternoon at the FCPS Central Office Board Room, 191 S. East Street—are open to the public and broadcast on FCPS TV, available from the FCPS website. Dates and times are:
*Thursday, December 14, 1:30-3:30
*Thursday, January 4, 1:30-3:30
*Thursday, January 18, 1-3
*Thursday, February 1, 2-4
*Thursday, February 15, 1:30-3:30
*Tuesday, February 27, 1-3
*Thursday, March 15, 1:30-3:30
The public may also view meetings already held on November 2, 16 and 30 online.
The Board of Education’s approved size for an elementary school is 725 students. Because of growth taking place in the Waverley area and lack of other school sites, a building that can seat about 1,020 students with a co-principal model is under consideration.
The feasibility study is the first step in the process to modernize and expand the school. The proposed timeline depends partly on the timing to replace the Rock Creek School at another site. The new Rock Creek School is expected to open for the 2021-2022 school year. The Waverley timeline is to complete the feasibility study this school year and the design by 2020 so that construction and a redistricting study can begin in the 2020-2021 school year, permitting the modernized Waverley Elementary to open for the 2022-2023 school year.
FCPS will post information about the project at www.fcps.org/facilities/waverley-feasibility-study. The public may email questions and comments to Waverley.Study@fcps.org.
