The Academy for the Fine Arts (AFA) at Frederick County Public Schools is accepting applications for the 2018-2019 school year. Open to students countywide in FCPS grades 10 to 12, the AFA offers an advanced program of studies in dance, music, theatre and visual arts. The magnet program, based at Governor Thomas Johnson High School, occurs during the first two instructional blocks only, permitting students to return to their neighborhood school for the afternoons, if desired.
The AFA’s college-level courses provide an intense curriculum to challenge and engage serious high school students. The program fosters refinement of individual artistic styles, techniques and portfolio development with enrichment opportunities through field trips, concerts, plays, museums, workshops and interaction with professional artists and mentors. Students accepted into the Academy are assisted in portfolio development along with preparation for the finest colleges and careers in the arts.
Applications for the countywide Academy are due Friday, February 2 for early admission, and there is a late-application deadline of Monday, April 9. Auditions are required; they will take place Saturdays, February 24 and April 28.
The application, details and a video are posted at https://education.fcps.org/aca. Included are opportunities for interested students in grades 9-11 to spend the day “shadowing” current AFA students.
