Frederick County Public Schools’ Valley Elementary in Jefferson, Maryland, was selected by Farmers Insurance as one of fifteen national finalists for the Big Dream Teacher Challenge $100,000. Valley Elementary is the only finalist in Maryland!
Hundreds of applications were submitted throughout the nation. Valley Elementary Literacy Specialist Jill Barnes submitted a grant proposal for a Mobile Literacy Clinic that would travel to teach students throughout local communities during summer and extended breaks. The school plans to put a significant portion of the grant money toward the purchase of literacy instruction materials, including high quality, high interest texts for classroom instruction. Principal Tracy Poquette says that a successful grant application and the Mobile Literacy Clinic would prove immensely beneficial to students in Frederick County.
FCPS and Valley Elementary ask for Marylander’s help to win the grant. Starting Monday, October 1, the public will have one month to vote online for the most worthy grant proposal. FCPS will share the link for voting and encourages everyone to share it widely and to vote daily. UPDATE: Because the start of voting was delayed, voting is now extended until Saturday, November 3.
The community’s help with this exciting program can make a positive difference for students as they work to master literacy goals.
