The Academy for the Fine Arts (AFA) at Frederick County Public Schools is accepting applications for the 2019-2020 school year. Open to students countywide in FCPS grades 10 to 12, the AFA offers an advanced program of studies in dance, music, theatre and visual arts. This magnet program, based at Governor Thomas Johnson High School, occurs during the first two instructional blocks only, permitting students to return to their neighborhood school for the afternoons.
Recognized for its unique collaboration opportunities, the AFA provides an intense curriculum that challenges and engages serious high school students while fostering refinement of individual artistic styles, techniques and portfolio development through enrichment opportunities such as field trips, concerts, plays, museums, workshops and interaction with professional artists and mentors. Students accepted into the Academy are assisted in preparation for the finest colleges and careers in the arts; however the desire to major in a fine arts field is not necessary.
Auditions for the AFA will take place Saturday, February 23 and Saturday, April 27. All application materials are due two weeks prior to auditioning.
