Frederick County Public Schools has hired a new director of Human Resources. Timothy D. Thornburg fills the vacancy created following Paula Lawton’s retirement.
Mr. Thornburg’s diverse experience with public education includes more than 20 years working in all facets of human resources and labor relations. He comes to FCPS from Montgomery County Public Schools, having served as the assistant to the associate superintendent in the Office of Human Resources and Development. He has also worked for Washington County Public Schools as Employee and Labor Relations supervisor from 2006-2013; Garrett County Public Schools as Human Resources and Employee and Labor Relations director from 2013-2016; and Howard County Public Schools as Staff Relations director from 2016-2017. In addition, he was a UniServ director from 1999-2006 in Nebraska, Delaware and Maryland.
Mr. Thornburg earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a minor in Journalism and his Master of Arts degree in English from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC and was a Fulbright Scholar in Japan. His career in public education began in Kansas as a Secondary English/Journalism teacher in the Shawnee Mission School District. He was also an adjunct instructor, teaching post-secondary courses such as School Law, English Composition and English As a Second Language. Mr. Thornburg holds professional certifications in Educational Leadership and Senior Professional in Human Resources.
