The Board of Education is preparing for the official opening of the newly created Office of the Ombuds, which they approved last November. The Office of the Ombuds will provide help to students, families, employees and residents seeking an informal way to confidentially discuss concerns and collaboratively develop options for their resolution. Sabrina Nail has accepted the new Ombuds position and is busy developing a Web page, video, brochure and other resources to let the public know about the services the office provides. She also attended the June 12 Board meeting, at which the Board approved the Office of the Ombuds vision, mission and goals.
Nail has an extensive background working with diverse populations regarding customer service, communication and conflict resolution. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in family and consumer science at the University of Maryland, College Park, and has worked more than two decades as senior claims specialist, first for State Farm Insurance and then for other insurance companies. She has also served seven years as a director of religious education. In each of these roles she honed her strengths in listening to build rapport and cultivate relationships with poise and proficiency in complex situations. She knows how to maintain confidentiality, conduct research, interpret policy language and problem solve. All of these skills make her an excellent choice to carry out the Ombuds roles and responsibilities.
The Board launched the office as part of its commitment to providing relevant, accurate, timely and transparent responses and services at the highest level of customer service, and to ensure a coordinated and comprehensive approach to serving students, cultivating an educational environment in which students thrive and relationships are fostered. The Board has charged the Ombuds with identifying and recommending strategies to improve outcomes. She is an impartial and independent resource to facilitate informal options for resolving education-related concerns.
Look for much more information coming soon when the Office of the Ombuds officially opens to visitors. FCPS will update the public when the Web page is ready and will provide contact information as soon as the Office of the Ombuds is formally launched.
