The Board of Education voted last night to name the new east-county area school Blue Heron Elementary. The school is slated for construction in the Lake Linganore Hamptons West community. It is scheduled to open in August 2021 if funding is available.
The FCPS School Name Recommendation Committee proposed three names. In priority order, the recommendations were Blue Heron Elementary, Linganore Creek Elementary and Lakeside Elementary. Tuscarora Elementary Literacy Specialist Susan Verdi, who chaired the committee, reported that 39 ideas were suggested, with 300 responses to the most recent public survey to collect feedback on the top eight. The committee included local business and community representatives, PTA members and parents from the Linganore and Oakdale feeder patterns, and staff from Deer Crossing and New Market Elementary Schools.
The committee gathered the first round of public input in April. Those submitting names were reminded of the BOE policy about naming schools. According to Policy 201 (https://apps.fcps.org/legal/doc.php?number=201), the BOE may name schools for historical events or geographical features such as local or regional landmarks or locations but not for people. After the committee narrowed the suggestions to eight names, having reviewed historical documents, property information and community suggestions, they conducted a second survey in May.
