Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) recently signed a partnership agreement with the Frederick County Reading Council (FCRC). The FCRC is a volunteer organization under the umbrella of the State of Maryland International Reading Association (SoMIRAC). Their goal is to promote a love for reading and writing as well as a deeper understanding of how to teach more effectively.
FCRC sponsors many events such as the Frederick County Youth Authors Contest, Reading in the Mall – a book giveaway event, Feed Your Brain to provide new books for families, and the Summer Achievement Academy to provide a library of books for summer students including a selection of new books to take home. Additionally FCRC will provide teacher training workshops twice each year and will notify FCPS of special programs such as speakers, author visits, and workshops that may benefit FCPS staff or students.
“I appreciate this partnership with FCRC,” says FCPS Curriculum Specialist for Elementary Language Arts Karen McGaha. “They put books into kids’ hands through community outreach efforts, and they provide professional development for teachers.”
“The FCRC is excited about this partnership because it meshes perfectly with our mission to promote literacy and best instructional practices in Frederick County,” says FCRC Corresponding Secretary Sally Marin. “We hope to spread the word to a wider audience about our professional learning opportunities, writing contests, book giveaways and teacher events.”
