Governor Wes Moore, Frederick County Executive Jessica Fitzwater, FCPS Superintendent Dr. Cheryl L. Dyson and Principal Eric Rhodes joined state and local leaders today to break ground on Linganore Creek Elementary School, the newest addition to Frederick County Public Schools.
They were joined by Interagency Commission on School Construction Executive Director Alex Donahue, members of the Frederick County delegation, Frederick County government, the Board of Education of Frederick County, students, members of the community, and FCPS leadership.
“Today’s groundbreaking marks another step in our commitment to expanding access to high-quality education for Maryland families,” Gov. Moore said. “As Frederick County continues to grow, our administration will continue to invest in schools so that every child has the opportunity to learn in a modern, welcoming environment.”
Linganore Creek Elementary School, scheduled to open for the 2026–27 school year, will help address enrollment growth and overcrowding in the eastern portion of Frederick County. Currently, 19 FCPS schools are operating over capacity, with nearby elementary schools among the most impacted.
County Executive Fitzwater emphasized the importance of the project for families in Frederick County. “Frederick County is Maryland’s fastest-growing school system, and Linganore Creek Elementary will help us address overcrowding while providing our students with a state-of-the-art learning environment,” she said. “I strongly support this project and am deeply grateful to Gov. Moore, our state partners, and FCPS for prioritizing school construction. Together, we are building the foundation for Frederick County’s future.”
The Moore-Miller administration’s Fiscal Year 2026 capital budget includes $825 million for public school construction statewide – $57 million more than originally planned – ensuring school systems like Frederick County can move forward with critical projects such as Linganore Creek Elementary.
“Breaking ground on Linganore Creek Elementary is a milestone moment for our school system,” Dr. Dyson said. “Our students and staff deserve modern facilities that match the excellence of the learning that happens inside them. We thank Gov. Moore, County Executive Fitzwater, and the Maryland State Department of Education for supporting our students and families through this important project.”
“Investments in new schools like Linganore Creek Elementary are investments in our future,” Dr. Michael said. “Every new classroom built is another opportunity to ensure students have the space and resources they need to thrive.”
Linganore Creek Elementary reflects FCPS’s commitment to safe, sustainable, and innovative learning environments.
