Advanced Academics Specialists

Frederick County Public Schools is fortunate to have Advanced Academics Specialists in each middle school and in seven of our elementary schools.  Advanced Academics Specialists support students in a variety of ways, such as:

  • working with classes and/or small groups of students to support enrichment, extension, and acceleration of curriculum;
  • providing guidance and professional learning in planning instruction for advanced learners;
  • facilitating the identification process for Advanced Academics programming;
  • offering interest-based opportunities for all students in the form of Learning Lunches or interest groups;
  • conducting higher-level Socratic seminar discussions or using Junior Great Books materials to extend cognitive skills;
  • supporting students’ advanced research and independent investigations;
  • reviewing data relevant to student achievement of advanced learners;
  • guiding students and families as they consider advanced learning opportunities within and beyond FCPS;
  • implementing school-specific extra-curricular opportunities, such as Destination Imagination, Spelling Bee, Future Cities, etc. (varies based on school).
