General Considerations for Parents
A student should be nominated through FCPS Elementary Magnet Program Application submission because his/her unique learning styles or specific, accelerated academic needs would make it difficult for the neighborhood school to meet the student’s needs without unusual placement, such as moving the student to a higher grade level for all or part of the day. If the child’s needs are being met appropriately at the current school, then the current or neighborhood school is the preferred placement.
Before completing an application for the magnet program, please give serious consideration to the child’s task commitment, study habits, organizational and planning skills, ability to learn and complete tasks independently, and range of creative productivity. If these characteristics are not present to a significant degree, the child’s ability to succeed in the program may be questionable, based upon the pace of instruction, the type and nature of assignments and the degree to which independence is stressed.
Transportation may be a concern when considering if the magnet program is appropriate for your child. Student transportation options are available, including: transportation by parent, carpooling, and county shuttle bus system. A carpooling list is made available to parents of magnet students indicating an interest in such an arrangement. Magnet students utilizing the county bus system may be transported by a middle or high school bus to a shuttle site where the students board a bus to the magnet program site. Please note that magnet students transition to their neighborhood middle school at the conclusion of the magnet school experience.
