The Department of Curriculum and Instruction leads the design and implementation of high-quality curriculum, instruction, assessments, and instructional programs that foster academic excellence and prepare all students for success in college and careers. The department oversees a wide range of content areas and programs, including: Career and Technical Education, English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, STEM, Social Studies, Health and Physical Education, Visual and Performing Arts, World Languages, Advanced Academics, Dual Enrollment, Early Childhood Education, Digital Solutions, the International Office, Judy Centers, Library Media Services, Multilingual Education, the Earth, Space, and Science Lab (ESSL), and Outdoor School.
Responsibilities of the department also include ensuring alignment with national and state standards, compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, and timely reporting to the Board of Education and the Maryland State Department of Education. The department also leads the development of curricular resources tailored to diverse learners, design local assessment tools, and oversee the evaluation of curriculum effectiveness. In collaboration with other offices across the instructional division, the department builds partnerships, delivers professional learning opportunities, administers district-wide initiatives, and provides direct support to schools.
