Students, Officials Celebrate Groundbreaking for Rock Creek School

Rock Creek School student representatives and Principal Katie Buckley joined County Executive Jan Gardner, Treasurer of Maryland Nancy Kopp, Board of Education President Brad W. Young, FCPS Superintendent Dr. Terry Alban and other officials at a groundbreaking ceremony today for their new school. The site of the new school is 55B W. Frederick Street in Walkersville.

On a 27.5-acre site behind Walkersville Middle School, the new school will serve 120 students. At nearly 84,400 square feet, the new building will include a Parks and Recreation Center exclusively for special needs use, including a multi-purpose activity room, an office, restroom and storage areas. A courtyard will provide an outdoor learning area with interactive special needs equipment. The design also includes a cafeteria, media center, a therapy pool, wall-to-wall wireless access and interactive panels in each classroom. The school will meet U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) Silver certification, with a passive-energy orientation and layout to maximize natural light, motion detectors to conserve energy and more.

Proffitt & Associates designed the new school and Dustin Construction is the construction manager. Completion is slated for winter/spring 2021.
