Wellness Resources
Frederick County Public Schools believes wellness of staff and students is critical to an effective school and part of a successful community. The Board of Education has identified wellness as one of the five aspirational goals. The aspirational goals are part of a long-term strategic plan that will guide the academic and operational goals of FCPS.
Aspirational Goal 5: FCPS will promote a culture fostering wellness and civility for students and staff.
Priority 9: FCPS will promote and maintain a safe and respectful environment.
Priority 10: FCPS will foster personal well-being and health among students and staff through increased awareness and engagement on these topics.
School Health Council
Research shows that healthy children do better in school - from attendance and behavior to academics and overall performance. The FCPS School Health Council (SHC) works with the district to help school communities support wellness and academic achievement.
What is SHC?
A SHC is a district advisory council. It is made up of FCPS personnel, Frederick County Health Department personnel, parents, and community members working together to improve the health of all students and families through a Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child model.
Why Do We Need a SHC?
Healthy children learn better
Schools play an important role in teaching healthy habits
Healthy homes and healthy schools support healthy children
What is a Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model?
The underlying purpose of the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model is to establish greater alignment, integration, and collaboration between health and education across the school setting to improve each child's cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development. This means aligning and integrating not just policies, but processes and practices that serve each child.
The ten interactive components of the WSCC model include:
Nutrition Environment and Services | Physical Education and Physical Activity |
Health Education | Family Engagement |
Community Involvement | Employee Wellness |
Social and Emotional School Climate | Physical Environment |
Counseling, Psychological and Social Services | Health Services |
