Registration Opens for Countywide Science & Social Studies Fairs

Frederick County Public Schools will host the 39th Annual Science and Engineering Fair (elementary and secondary) and the 7th Annual Elementary Social Studies Fair, both open free to the public, on Saturday, March 28, at Tuscarora High School.

The elementary science fair is open to the public 9:30-noon. Elementary social studies fair presentations are 9:30-11:30 a.m.  A free STEM Showcase, with hands-on science, technology, engineering and math projects for all grade levels, is open to the public 9-11:30 a.m.

The secondary Science and Engineering Fair, featuring projects from students in grades 6-12, is open to visitors from 3-4 p.m., with an awards ceremony beginning at 4.

Registration is open for students wishing to enter projects in the fairs. Registration deadlines are Sunday, March 8 for secondary science and engineering and Monday, March 23 for elementary science and  social studies.

The fairs’ shared date and location allow families to spend the day enjoying projects and research based on student interests. The schedule also allows elementary students participating in both fairs to explore more information about a particular interest. For example, a student completing a science project to learn which plants grow well under certain conditions could broaden that topic to complete a related social studies project about how agriculture affects the community.
