Frederick County Academic Tournament returns in virtual format

The Frederick County Academic Tournament is going virtual this year with this year’s first matches scheduled for Friday, January 8.

Every FCPS high school is represented in this year’s tournament. Teams will compete weekly against two or three other high schools.

Each week’s matches will feature a theme, starting with Elements and the Periodic Table in Week 1, Empires and Emperors in Week 2, and American Authors and their Works in Week 3.

The tournament finals will be held Friday, February 26.

Virtual matches will be recorded and posted online at https://www.fcps.org/academics/academic-tournament. The matches will be viewable on the Mondays after matches are completed.

The Frederick County Academic Tournament is in its 40th year.

Since 1982, Linganore High teams have won the tournament nine times, Frederick High and Walkersville teams have won six, teams from Gov. Thomas Johnson and Middletown have each won five, teams from Urbana and Brunswick have each won three, and teams from Catoctin and Tuscarora have each won once.

Walkersville High won the regular season and tournament championships last year.
