FCPS plans virtual celebration honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Frederick County Public Schools’ students and staff will celebrate the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on what would have been his 92nd birthday during a virtual celebration presented Friday, January 15.

The program theme for this 31st annual event is Only in the Darkness Can You See the Stars: Courage to Be the Light.

During the presentation, which will air on both FCPS Cable Channel 18 and the FCPS Maryland YouTube channel, students will be recognized with King Awards, presented to one outstanding student from each of the county’s public schools. It will premiere on FCPS Cable Channel 18 at 7 p.m. Friday, January 15.

To earn the award, the student must have demonstrated positive leadership qualities characteristic of Dr. King and exhibited traits of responsibility, caring, fairness, trustworthiness, citizenship and respect – the six pillars of Character Counts!

FCPS schools and offices will be closed Monday, January 18, in observance of Dr. King’s birthday.
