FCPS Principal and Assistant Principal Appointments

Frederick County Public Schools announces several principal and assistant principal appointments. Personnel appointments remain subject to change based on the evolving needs of the school system.

The following school principal appointments will take effect:

Butterfly Ridge Elementary, Jason Anderson. Mr. Anderson transfers from Carroll County Public Schools, where he served as chief academic, equity and accountability officer. He becomes principal effective February 15. Mr. Anderson began his career with FCPS as a teacher at Glade Elementary School. He also served as a teacher specialist for language arts, an assistant principal at Waverley Elementary School and principal at New Market Elementary and Monocacy Elementary. He was later appointed supervisor of curriculum and instruction PreK-5 and then executive director of curriculum, instruction, assessment and innovation PreK-12. Mr. Anderson left FCPS in 2014 to serve as Vice President of National Solutions PreK-12 at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in Boston. In 2017, he returned to Maryland where he served as principal of Riviera Beach Elementary in Anne Arundel County. Since 2018, he has served as the chief academic, equity and accountability officer in Carroll County Public Schools. Anderson received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Salisbury University and a Master of Science degree in Educational Leadership and Supervision from Hood College.

Parkway Elementary, John Ridenour. Mr. Ridenour will transfer from Hillcrest Elementary where he served as assistant principal. He will take over as acting principal effective January 3.

Waverley Elementary, Julie Ivins. Ms. Ivins began her career with FCPS as a third-grade classroom teacher at Glade Elementary. She later taught at Tuscarora Elementary and Middletown Primary. Ms. Ivins also served as a literacy specialist at both Green Valley Elementary and North Frederick Elementary. In 2019, she was promoted to assistant principal at Waverley Elementary, where she currently serves as acting principal. She takes over as principal on January 1.

Wolfsville Elementary, Tess Blumenthal. Ms. Blumenthal, a retired principal who most recently served at Sugarloaf Elementary, will become acting principal, effective January 3.

 

***The following schools will have new assistant principals, effective immediately, except where noted:

Butterfly Ridge Elementary, Susan Amerena served as acting principal at Butterfly Ridge Elementary and will return to an assistant principal role Feb. 15. Chelsey Shaw, is serving as acting assistant principal from January 3 until February 14. She is a current teacher and math specialist at BRES.

Gov. Thomas Johnson Middle, Kristy Ritchie was an assistant principal at a school in Virginia. She starts January 16.

Heather Ridge School, Barbara Nibert is promoted from acting assistant principal at HRS.

Hillcrest Elementary, Kevin Weis (acting assistant principal) is transferring (January 3) from Butterfly Ridge Elementary where he also served as acting assistant principal.

Linganore High, Marcus Allen is transferring (January 16) from Urbana High where he served as assistant principal.

Oakdale Middle, Tobin (Toby) Heusser is acting assistant principal, effective January 3. He served as a teacher specialist with the Accelerated Achievement and Equity department.

Tuscarora Elementary, Erica Cummins is transferring (January 18) from Centerville Elementary where she served as assistant principal.

Tuscarora High, Kristin Sheehy is promoted to assistant principal from Gov. Thomas Johnson High where she served as a special education teacher. She starts January 16.

Urbana High, Corey Matheny is promoted from acting assistant principal at UHS.

Urbana Middle, Leroy Hand is transferring (January 18) from Oakdale Middle, where he served as assistant principal.
