FCPS Interim Superintendent Releases Recommended Budget Focused on Student Supports, Competitive Salaries and Enhancing Supports for Schools

Frederick County Public Schools Interim Superintendent Dr. Mike Markoe has released his recommended Fiscal Year 2023 operating budget.
 
His recommended budget totals $836.1 million. Budget priorities include:

  • Focusing on student needs, including 36 additional classroom teacher positions
  • Maintaining competitive salaries with surrounding school districts
  • Enhancing supports to schools with significant needs
  • Continuing response to COVID-19 crisis, including increased mental health services for students

“This year’s recommended budget was designed to position our students, employees and school system for optimal success in the coming years,” Markoe said. “At its core, the budget reflects the values, direction and focus of our school system.”  

The superintendent’s recommended budget release is the first step in the process of finalizing the operating budget for FY2023.

The Board of Education of Frederick County is scheduled to discuss the recommended budget at its Wednesday, January 12 meeting. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the board room at 191 S. East Street in Frederick. It will be open for up to 50 people who wish to attend in-person. This will be conducted on a first-come, first-serve basis with face coverings required. All Board meetings are livestreamed.

Additionally, the Board of Education will hold a public hearing on the Fiscal Year 2023 Operating Budget at 7 p.m. Wednesday, February 2, at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School, 1501 N. Market Street in Frederick.
