Groundbreaking ceremonies were held Thursday afternoon on the site of a new Brunswick Elementary School.

Frederick County Executive Jan Gardner, FCPS Interim Superintendent Dr. Mike Markoe and numerous other officials were on hand for the event. The new school, estimated to cost $48 million, will be located adjacent to the existing Brunswick Elementary. That school was built in 1952 and will eventually be razed.

The new school is expected to open in the fall of 2023; site work began last month. The building, at 96,000 square feet, will be home to more than 700 students and include a parks and recreation area. When it opens, Brunswick Elementary will have a cafeteria with a stage, a gymnasium with a maker-space for student projects and three playgrounds.
