FCPS announces Science and Engineering Fair results

Five FCPS high school students qualified to participate in a national competition in Dallas in May following participation in the 42nd FCPS Science and Engineering Fair.

Grand prize winners Jeanelle Lin and Alex Tekeyan, from Tuscarora High, and runner-ups Tarun Malarvasan, Karthik Muthukkumar and Pranav Sristy, from Urbana High, are eligible to compete at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair May 14-19 in Dallas.

Lin and Tekeyan’s project was entitled “Alice: Robotic Hand to Translate English to American Sign Language using Speech and Text Technology for Hard of Hearing Individuals.”

Malarvasan, Muthukkumar, and Sristy’r project was entitled “DIVA: Spatial Navigation for the Visually Impaired using Depth Sensing Artificial Intelligence and Convolutional Neural Networks.

The 42nd FCPS Science and Engineering Fair was held March 25 at Tuscarora High, where several middle school students also qualified to compete nationally through the ThermoFisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge.

Urbana High’s Grace Liu and Bang Luong were named the first place cover art design winners at the Science & Engineering Fair.
