Multilingual Education Program Teacher Ivette Taboas earns prestigious honor
Urbana Elementary Multilingual Education Program Teacher Ivette Taboas, who is committed to helping students succeed while respecting their individuality, is the 2024 FCPS Teacher of the Year.
Taboas was surprised with the news at a school assembly attended by FCPS Superintendent Dr. Cheryl L. Dyson, FCPS leadership, elected officials, Urbana Elementary administration, students, and staff, and her family.
Taboas will be the FCPS nominee in the 2024 Maryland State Teacher of the Year program.
“I am thrilled to celebrate Ms.Taboas for the integral role she plays supporting students and families in the Urbana Elementary community,” Dyson said. “As an elite communicator and educator, she is always finding new and innovative ways to ensure students are successful in their learning journeys.”
Taboas has served the Urbana Elementary community since 2020, where she collaborates and plans with classroom teachers, specialists, and interventionalists to support student learning. She also serves as a pivotal liaison for multilingual families in the community.
Taboas, who is bilingual, was an FCPS Itinerant Multilingual Education teacher for four schools from August 2018-19. She was a teacher at Centerville Elementary from 2013-18 and Hillcrest Elementary from 2009-13. Prior to joining FCPS, Taboas was an educator for Miami and Dade County Public Schools in Florida.
At Urbana, she mentors new teachers and is the school’s equity representative. For FCPS, she has served as a Spanish language interpreter, a curriculum writer for the Multilingual Education Program and a Young Scholars Summer Program Educator.
Taboas, who resides in Frederick, completed an Administrative Internship and earned a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from American Public University. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Nova Southeastern University. She is also a National Board Certified teacher.
Teacher of the Year is the most prestigious honor given to an FCPS educator. Each FCPS school is encouraged to nominate a teacher. A committee of FCPS leaders, teachers, community members and students select the recipient. The award has been given annually since 1998. A full list of past winners is available online.
