Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) is pleased to announce that Tuscarora High School teacher, Brandon Chuhran, was awarded the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher of the Year Award for District 2, Post 7757.
Chuhran is a graduate of Kalamazoo College, and has been a teacher for FCPS for 18 years. He was nominated for the award by a student, and in February he was recognized by the VFW District 2, Post 7757 as the district level winner. Chuhran’s nomination stood out because he takes his students on experiential field trips to The National Museum of African American History and Culture and The U.S. Capitol Building. He was then advanced to the state level where he was named the runner up.
The Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher of the Year Award recognizes current K-12 teachers who promote civic responsibility, flag etiquette, organize government field trips, plan programs that feature veterans, foster the development of democratic values and beliefs through special projects, and encourage patriotism. Nominated teachers provide a resume, documentation of their teaching experience, and must complete several interviews with the representative from the local VFW chapter.
