Frederick County Public Schools is thrilled to share that nine FCPS marching bands competed in the MMBA (Maryland Marching Band Association) state championships at Towson University on Saturday, November 2. FCPS marching bands took home three state championships as well as several other placements.
Walkersville High, Gov. Thomas Johnson High, and Tuscarora High earned state titles.

1st Place State Champions: Walkersville High
2nd Place Middletown High
3rd place Frederick High
6th Place Brunswick High
FCPS also did well in the caption awards. Caption awards represent individual categories within a marching band. Walkersville High earned the caption awards for Best Percussion, Best Music, Best Effect, Best Color Guard. Best Visual went to Middletown High School.
Open Small Division:
1st Place State Champions: Gov. Thomas Johnson High School
Incredibly, Gov. Thomas Johnson High School swept all of the caption awards in their division, including Best Percussion, Best Color Guard, Best Music, Best Visual, and Best Effect.
Open Large Division:
1st Place State Champions: Tuscarora High School
3rd Place Urbana High School
4th Place Linganore High School
6th Place Oakdale High School
Walkersville High made a touching tribute by dedicating their win to Walkersville High Assistant Principal Mike Hombach, who passed away recently.
"This was a very hard week for the Walkersville community with the passing of Mike Hombach, an amazing band parent, administrator, and friend,” said Band director Alex Loy. “I dedicate this win to him. I hope this win brings some joy to our community and reminds us of the beauty music has in our lives."
