Frederick, MD – Frederick County Public Schools hosted the annual Secondary Science and Engineering Fair on Saturday, March 22, at Tuscarora High School. It featured the innovative work of middle and high school students from all across Frederick County.
The high school winners and runner ups from the Secondary Science and Engineering Fair have the opportunity to advance to compete in the International Science in Engineering Fair in Ohio in May.
Overall High School Fair Winners:
- Grand Prize: Tarun Malarvasan, Urbana High: “Bi-Stable Auxetic Stent Design for Customized Vascular Conformability”
- Runner-Up: Victor Wang, Urbana High: “Flying Hawk: Enhancing Drone’s Performance by Tuning PID Controllers"
Overall Middle School Fair Winners:
- Grand Prize: Amrutha Thalla, Urbana Middle: “The Effect of DNA Concentration on the Cycle Threshold and Rate of DNA Replication Using qPCR"
- Runner-Up: Ankita Kashyap, Urbana Middle: “FlameShield: Intelligent Gas Leakage and Heat Detection System"
The ThermoFisher Scientific Junior Innovators Competition nominees are eligible to compete nationally.
ThermoFisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge Nominees are also eligible to compete nationally at a competition held in Washington, D.C. The grand prize and runner-up finishers in middle school have been JIC nominees in the past and are not eligible to be nominated again.
