Teacher Career Ladder
What is the Career ladder?
The Blueprint for Maryland’s Future requires all school systems in Maryland to create a clear pathway for educators that provides monetary incentives for increasing credentials and leadership over their careers. The “ladder” is a visual depiction of the possible ways a teacher can increase their earnings and leadership opportunities as they move "up the ladder".
When does the career ladder go into effect?
July 1, 2025.
Did our salary scales change?
No. The levels of the Career Ladder are merely layered on top of our existing structure so that you can see the connections between levels of education, NBC certification, and advancement opportunities.
What if I don’t want to move on the ladder?
You are not required to advance beyond level 2 on the career ladder. However, educators who choose to advance will be able to see the pathway for their growth.
What do you get for moving "up the ladder"?
If you obtain your National Board Certification, or earn a master’s degree in an area that there is not yet an NBC available, you can move up to level 3. Teachers at level 3 are provided an additional $10,000 on top of their salary. There are additional financial incentives, including for maintaining or renewing your NBC when you move beyond level 3 and selected positions will be available at level 4.
Is the ladder finished?
No. FCTA, FCASA and FCPS are currently working to design what level 4 (the top level) will look like for lead teachers and administrators. Level 4 will include additional financial incentives, but all of them will continue to require you have your NBC.
If you have questions or would like to learn more about the Career Ladder, we will be sharing information on or before July 2025 with updates!
