Elementary Mathematics
The Elementary Math Team recognizes that every student, Pre-K through grade 5 is able to solve challenging mathematical problems and tasks successfully. All students should have opportunities during and outside the school day to be engaged with meaningful mathematical experiences. As children learn mathematics they develop concepts, skills and practices they will use in science, technology, business and a wide range of career areas.
Within the Pre-K-5 mathematics program teachers and Elementary Math Specialists develop understanding within the following areas of study:
- Counting and Cardinality
- Operations and Algebraic Thinking
- Number and Operations in Base Ten
- Number and Operations - Fractions
- Measurement and Data
- Geometry
Children learn to value, understand and use math to problem solve and communicate their mathematical thinking. The FCPS mathematics curriculum encourages students to develop deep conceptual understanding, procedural fluency and an ability to use this knowledge to think, solve problems and communicate their thinking and reasoning. As a result, children will grow a strong sense of student agency and a productive mathematical identity.
