Special Education Considerations for Home and Hospital Teaching
Any HHT request approved for a student with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) requires an expedited IEP team meeting. The purpose is to review and revise the student’s IEP, as appropriate, as well as to determine the instructional services provided during HHT. The PPW should participate in this IEP team meeting. Basic instructional services can begin while awaiting this meeting to occur and may need to be adjusted depending upon the recommendations of the IEP team. The IEP team is responsible for formalizing a transition plan to support the students return to the school-based program at the outset of HHT. A copy of the student’s IEP must be given to the HHT teacher as soon as possible. The IEP team must re-convene anytime HHT is re-verified or ending.
Note: COMAR limits HHT due to an emotional condition for special education students to a maximum of 60 consecutive school days. HHT is not to be used as a temporary placement for a student with a disability awaiting placement in a nonpublic special school or awaiting a change of placement. See COMAR Section 13a.05.01.10. Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) for more information.
