Blue Heron Elementary School - New Construction

Background

The new Blue Heron Elementary School (formerly known as East County area Elementary School), housing grades Pre-K through 5th, will be constructed on a 15-acre site dedicated by Oakdale Investments, LLC in the Hamptons West neighborhood of Lake Linganore. The property is located at 7100 Eaglehead Drive, New Market, MD 21774.

The architect for the new Blue Heron Elementary is GWWO Architects. The construction manager is Oak Contracting, LLC.

The educational specifications for this school is used to develop the new prototype elementary school design for FCPS, and will have a state rated capacity (SRC) of 705 students. Blue Heron Elementary School will be approximately 98,000 gross square feet (GSF) and will be an energy efficient building that meets at a minimum, USGBC LEEDv4 Silver certification requirements.

The design of this project began in November 2018 and will continue through December 2019. The design will include the latest in building security and technology features, including wall to wall wireless communication.

The project team anticipates bidding the project as follows:

• Construction bid between January 2020 and February 2020
  • Phase A Contract awards on March 1, 2020 (FY20)
  • Phase B Contract awards on July 1, 2020 (FY21)

The preliminary construction schedule has been developed for a 15-month construction duration as follows:

• Construction Phase A beginning on March 1, 2020 through June 30, 2020.
• Construction Phase B beginning on July 1, 2020 through June 30, 2021.

The substantial completion date for construction is June 30, 2021 and the new school is expected to be open and occupied in September 2021.
