Thurmont Elementary School Limited Renovation

Background

Thurmont Elementary School (ES) is located at 805 East Main Street at the east end of the Town of Thurmont and serves students in Third through Fifth Grade.  The single-story building was originally constructed on the 15.31 acre site in 1955. Additions to the school were made in 1959 and 1976, resulting in a facility of 60,331 square feet. The Facility Condition Index (FCI) for Thurmont ES is 32% and is classified as critical. Thurmont ES has a state rated capacity (SRC) of 368 students and a September 2020 enrollment of 293 students. 

FCPS completed a facility and program assessment of Thurmont Elementary in September 2020 to determine opportunities for a limited renovation to extend the life of the building. At the October 21, 2020 Board of Education (BOE) meeting, the BOE voted to proceed with the state and local funding request for a limited renovation at Thurmont ES. The project schedule is contingent on approval of the funding request.
